The Smell of Water

The desert.

The desert is dry.

The desert is dry and brown.

The desert is dry and brown and dusty.

The desert is dry and brown and dusty and hot.

The desert is dry and brown and dusty and hot and windy.

The desert smells like dust and sage and wind and heat and tar.

Water in the desert smells like fertilizer and pesticide and cow piss.

The desert is not a place to live.  The desert is a place to survive and get the hell out of.  But you never can because the desert lasts forever.

  1. Mike,

I can introduce you to folks at the Wilderness Medical Society who love to hike and backpack in the desert. They would prefer deserts to the mountains and woods. Everyone has their preference, now I know yours! 🙂

  2. Mike, I rode through deserts in Egypt, Jordan and Israel, as well as those in Arizona and Utah in America, The group America sings of the desert as “an ocean with its life underground and a perfect disguise above”. Deserts can be fascinating, but not if you’re hot, tired and out of water or have bike problems without the tools to fix them. I hope you’re enjoying the trip, even the desert parts. Jerry
